Ceiling Painting on an Atlanta-area home

Short answer

Ceiling painting in Atlanta adds an extra $1 to $1.50 per square foot when done with the walls, per Angi's 2026 Atlanta data. Most of the job is prep and technique: covering the room, sealing stains and rolling flat paint without stopping so no lap lines dry in. Vaulted ceilings cost more. Call to have us look.

Why ceilings show every flaw in side light

Window light hits a ceiling at a low angle and exposes roller lines, patches with a different sheen and stains creeping back through ordinary paint. A good ceiling job controls all three.

We cover floors and furniture completely, since overhead work drips more than walls. Stains and patches get primer, the edge along the walls is brushed first, and the ceiling is rolled in true flat paint in long passes that always land on a wet edge.

What drives the price

What shifts the cost of a ceiling repaint

Ceilings are priced by area, then adjusted for these:

Published range: an extra $1 to $1.50 per square foot for the ceiling. Source: Angi, Atlanta data updated July 2026. A planning figure, not our quote.

Height

Anything above a standard ceiling needs taller ladders, planks or scaffold.

Stains and yellowing

Spot priming is quick; priming a whole yellowed ceiling is an extra coat.

Texture

Popcorn and knockdown soak up more paint and need a slower roll.

Room contents

Everything under the ceiling has to be moved or covered.

Fixtures and fans

Bagging or lowering lights, fans and vents adds time at each one.

Flat drywall ceilings

Standard eight- and nine-foot drywall ceilings are most of the ceiling work we do. Height is not the challenge here; consistency is. We use a dedicated flat ceiling paint, which hides dents and tape joints better than eggshell, and roll the full width of the room before the first pass sets. Nail pops and cracked seams get fixed first, since fresh paint makes them more visible. On textured ceilings we switch to a thicker nap and test a corner, so old texture does not loosen under the wet coat.

Vaulted and sloped ceilings

Sloped ceilings get staging.

Vaulted ceilings in great rooms and bonus rooms add height and long sloped planes that show every change in sheen. We set ladders, planks or a rolling scaffold so the roller meets the surface square instead of at a stretch. The ridge line and any exposed beams are cut in by hand, and fans at the peak are bagged or lowered. We plan stopping points at natural edges, such as a beam or a change in plane, never halfway across a slope where a lap line would dry in plain view.

Stain-block before topcoat

Water rings, fireplace smoke and nicotine bleed through ordinary ceiling paint, sometimes within hours and sometimes weeks later. A stain-blocking primer, shellac or oil-based for the worst marks, seals the stain so the topcoat stays white. Small marks get spot primed; a ceiling yellowed throughout gets primed edge to edge. Before priming a water ring we ask one question: has the leak been fixed? Painting over an active leak only hides it until the next heavy rain, and then the ring comes back larger than before.

Ceilings usually get Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore flat ceiling paint, with Zinsser shellac or Kilz oil primer under stains.

Around Atlanta

Painting ceilings through an Atlanta summer

Atlanta has a humid subtropical climate, with long summers that stay hot and humid. Waterborne paint dries by releasing water, and damp air slows that down, most of all at the ceiling, where warm air pools. A pass that is still soft is easy to mark with the next one. In summer we keep the air conditioning running while we work, since it pulls moisture out of the room, and we give ceilings their full recoat time instead of going by touch.

How the job runs

Steps for a ceiling that dries even

  1. Clear and cover

Furniture moves out or to the center; floors and the rest get covered.

  2. Fix the surface

Cracks are taped or caulked, nail pops reset and patches sanded.

  3. Prime what bleeds

Water marks, smoke film and patches get stain-blocking primer.

  4. Cut the edge

A brushed line along the walls goes on before the roller.

  5. Roll in one pass

Wet edge to wet edge, then checked in side light.

What you will notice

Ceiling problems you can spot from the floor

Brown or yellow rings

Dried water stains that return through touch-ups need stain-blocking primer.

Stripes in morning light

Lap marks show when low sun crosses the ceiling.

Patches with a different shine

Unprimed patches absorb paint unevenly and flash through.

Cracked tape seams

Joint cracks return unless they are re-taped or caulked first.

A dingy film above the fireplace

Soot leaves a residue plain paint will not cover evenly.
