Painting two-story foyers and tall rooms in Atlanta

Tall entries and stairwells are out of reach for most household ladders. We paint them across Atlanta from planks, scaffold or a lift, with stairs and floors protected underneath.

Two-Story Foyer & High Ceiling Painting on an Atlanta-area home

Short answer

Painting a two-story foyer in Atlanta is mostly a setup job: planks, scaffold or a lift placed safely over stairs and finished floors before any paint opens. Walls, ceiling and high trim then get the same prep as any room. Expect the entry partly blocked for a day or more. Height and access set the price, so we quote on site. Call to schedule.

Tall spaces are an access problem before a paint problem

The paint on a foyer wall is the same paint that goes in a bedroom. What changes is reaching it: a staircase along one side, a window high on the front wall, a chandelier in the middle and finished floors below.

We plan the setup first, deciding where ladders stand on the stairs, where planks bridge between them and when a rolling scaffold or lift is the better choice. Floors and treads get padded, the chandelier gets bagged, and work runs top down.

What drives the price

Why height drives the cost of a foyer repaint

Height means setup time and slower work. Angi's Atlanta figure below is for an ordinary stair hall; a two-story foyer runs higher.

Published range: $350 to $450 for a stairway or hallway. Source: Angi, Atlanta data updated July 2026. A planning figure, not our quote.

Wall and ceiling height

Every few feet of height adds setup and slows cutting in at the top.

Stairs below the work

Ladders and planks over treads take longer to set safely than on a flat floor.

Scaffold or lift

Larger rooms may need staging or a lift brought into the house.

High trim and windows

Crown, transoms and casing high on the wall are slow to cut in.

Fixtures

Chandeliers, high lights and fans need covering or lowering.

Two-story foyers

Foyers are the first thing guests see, and they collect marks nobody can reach: scuffs from moving furniture up the stairs, cobwebs in high corners and nail holes from art hung tall. The ceiling and upper walls often have not been painted since the house was built. We set staging so the painter can roll the upper wall in full, even passes instead of reaching sideways, which is what causes streaks. The front window wall and its trim are cut in from planks, and the chandelier is protected rather than hurried around.

Great rooms and stairwells

Planks bridge over padded treads.

Great rooms with two-story walls, and stairwells rising along a wall, bring the same height with more obstacles: a stair rail, a landing, sometimes a balcony looking down. The wall above the stairs is the hardest spot in many houses, because the floor under it is a slope of treads. We use stair-safe ladders with leveling legs and planks across them, and pad every tread we stand on. Tall fireplace walls often have stone or brick that stays unpainted, so the edge where drywall meets masonry is cut by hand.

Scaffold and lift setups

Most foyers can be reached with extension ladders, a stair ladder and planks. Bigger great rooms and very tall walls over an open floor often go faster and safer with a rolling scaffold assembled inside the house; the frames fit through a standard door and stand on protective pads. A small electric lift suits open rooms with a clear floor, though it needs a path through the house and a floor that can carry its weight. We settle the setup during the walk-through and explain the choice, so nothing surprises you on the first morning.

What the job includes

What a foyer or high-ceiling job includes

Scope on tall rooms varies between painters. Ours includes, unless you change it:

  • Setting and removing ladders, planks or scaffold
  • Padding stair treads, floors and the front door
  • Bagging or lowering the chandelier
  • Ceiling in flat ceiling paint
  • Upper and lower walls in two coats
  • High window casing and crown
  • Patching nail holes at full height
  • A clear walkway every evening

Around Atlanta

Where tall foyers turn up around Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County's housing skews newer: in ACS figures for the county school district, 38.6% of homes were built in 2000 or later and only 4.3% before 1970. Single-story ranches rarely have a tall entry, so two-story foyers and great rooms tend to show up in newer two-story houses. In those homes the upper walls are often the last surfaces anyone repaints, simply because they are hard to reach, which is why the top half of an entry can look years older than the bottom.

How long the entry stays blocked

Setup takes part of the first day, and staging stays up until every high surface is done. A typical foyer is a one- or two-day job; great rooms and long stairwells take longer, especially when a scaffold has to move midway.

During working hours the stairs or front door may be partly blocked. Each evening we leave a clear path so the house works normally overnight.

How the job runs

From staging plan to the last coat on a tall wall

  1. Plan the access

We measure heights, look at stairs and floors and choose the equipment.

  2. Protect below

Floors, treads, rails and the front door get pads; fixtures get bagged.

  3. Set the staging

Equipment goes up and is checked before anyone climbs.

  4. Paint top down

Ceiling first, then upper walls and trim, then lower walls from the floor.

  5. Strike and clean

Staging comes down, covers come off and we check the entry with you.
