Painting steel and wood garage doors across Atlanta

On many Atlanta homes the garage door faces the street and takes the full afternoon sun, so it fades first and sets the tone for the whole front of the house.

Garage Door Painting on an Atlanta-area home

Short answer

Painting a garage door in Atlanta costs roughly $200 to $500 for a two-car door and $100 to $250 for a one-car door, going by Angi's 2026 national figures. Most of the work is prep: scrubbing off chalk, treating rust and sanding wood panels before primer. Call us and we will look at the door before pricing it.

What it takes to make paint stick to a garage door

Most garage doors leave the factory with a baked-on finish. Years of sun break it down into chalk, a powdery film that rubs off on your hand, and new paint will not hold to it. So the job starts with a degreasing scrub and a rinse, and we wipe the door afterward to make sure nothing comes off on the rag.

Then it depends on the door. Steel gets its rust sanded and primed, wood gets sanded and its bare spots sealed, and we brush the panel recesses before rolling the flats so lap marks do not show.

What drives the price

One-car, two-car and what else moves the price

Door size sets the starting point; condition and style decide where in that range a door lands.

Single or double

A two-car door has about twice the surface of a one-car door.

Panel style

Raised panels and carriage trim take more brushing than flat steel.

Rust and dents

Treating rust and filling dents adds time before any primer.

Wood or steel

Wood needs sanding, primer and often an extra coat.

Finish choice

A wood-look finish adds a base coat, a grain coat and a clear coat.

Steel garage doors

Steel doors are forgiving as long as the prep is done. Under the chalk, the factory coating usually still holds tight, so after cleaning we scuff it, spot-prime any bare or rusted metal and apply two coats of exterior acrylic. Dents can be filled with a metal filler, though deep creases rarely vanish completely. Very dark colors on a steel door in full sun soak up heat that can stress panels and seals, so we talk that through before going dark. Insulated doors paint the same way as hollow ones.

Wood carriage doors

Stained carriage doors get a clear coat over the new color.

Wood carriage doors look great and ask for more care. Wood moves with humidity, so paint cracks along panel joints and at the bottom section, where rain splashes back off the driveway. We sand failing paint, fill open joints with an exterior filler and prime bare wood before two finish coats. A stained door can stay stained: the old finish is cleaned or stripped, then new stain and a clear coat go on. Rot along the bottom panel is common, and we fix it or flag it before any paint.

Wood-look finishes

A wood-look finish makes a plain steel door read like stained wood from the street. It is built in layers: a base coat, a tinted gel stain dragged with a brush to create grain, and a clear topcoat. Kits exist for homeowners, but keeping the grain direction and color depth even across a wide double door is the hard part. We do a test panel first so you can see the tone in daylight. It suits craftsman and farmhouse fronts and pairs well with a stained front door.

Steel doors usually get Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore exterior acrylic over a Zinsser bonding primer, and wood-look finishes often start from Giani or General Finishes gel stain.

Around Atlanta

Atlanta summer sun on a street-facing garage door

WeatherSpark's climate data puts Atlanta's hot season from May 26 to September 18, with average daily highs above 80°F and July averaging 88°F. A street-facing garage door takes that afternoon sun across its whole face, which is what chalks a factory finish and fades reds and browns. In summer we paint garage doors while they sit in morning shade and keep fresh coats off hot steel.

How the job runs

How a garage door repaint is done

  1. Look the door over

We check for rust, dents, soft wood and how the door runs.

  2. Scrub off the chalk

A degreasing wash and rinse lift chalk, grime and mildew.

  3. Treat and prime

Rust is sanded and primed; worn spots get bonding primer.

  4. Paint section by section

Recesses are brushed and flats rolled, working top to bottom.

  5. Cycle and check

Once dry, the door is run so nothing sticks at the seals.

Do it yourself or hire it out

Painting a garage door yourself versus hiring it out

A garage door is one of the more manageable exterior jobs to try on your own. These are the parts that go wrong.

TaskDoing it yourselfWhen to call a painter
Cleaning off chalkDoable with a degreaser, a brush and a hose. When chalk still comes off after two scrubs.
Rust spotsSmall spots sand out and take a rust primer. When rust has pitted or runs along the bottom section.
Rolling the panelsLap marks and drips in the recesses are the usual tell. When you want even color across a double door.
Moving partsPaint on rollers, hinges or seals can make the door bind.If the door is out of balance, a garage door technician comes first.
