Short answer
Trim and baseboard painting in Atlanta runs about $1 to $4 per linear foot in Angi's 2026 Atlanta figures, and hard-to-reach trim can add up to an additional $6 per linear foot. Doors are priced per door. Most of the time goes into sanding, filling and caulking so the enamel lies flat. Call and we will measure.
Why trim paint wears out before the walls
Trim takes the abuse: vacuum bumps, shoe scuffs, hands on door edges and dogs along the baseboard. It needs an enamel that cures hard and resists blocking, the sticking you get when a fresh door closes against its stop.
Before that enamel goes on, we degloss and sand the old finish, fill dents and nail holes, and recaulk where trim has pulled away from the wall. Old oil-based trim, common in older homes, gets a bonding primer first, because latex over glossy oil tends to peel in strips.

Choosing between options
Choosing an enamel for trim and doors
Three paint types cover most interior trim. Each trades smoothness, yellowing and drying time differently.
| Compare | Waterborne alkyd | Acrylic enamel | Oil-based enamel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finish | Levels smooth, close to oil | Good, shows more brush marks | Smoothest and hardest |
| Yellowing | Low | Very low | Yellows, most in dim rooms |
| Recoat time | Slower than acrylic | Fastest | Slowest, often next day |
| Odor and cleanup | Low odor, water cleanup | Low odor, water cleanup | Strong odor, solvent cleanup |
| Good fit for | Doors and trim you want glass smooth | Baseboards in busy rooms | Recoating trim that is already oil |
What drives the price
How trim and door pricing adds up
Trim is measured by the linear foot and doors by the piece. These change the per-foot number:
Published range: $1 to $4 per linear foot, with hard-to-reach trim adding up to an additional $6 per linear foot. Source: Angi, Atlanta data updated July 2026. A planning figure, not our quote.
Profile and detail
Flat base goes fast; tall colonial base and built-up crown do not.
Door style
Six-panel and French doors take far more brushwork than slab doors.
Existing finish
Glossy oil trim needs deglossing and a bonding primer.
Caulk and dents
Pulled-away caulk and dented base mean more filling and sanding.
Height
Crown and casing above stairs counts as hard-to-reach trim.
Baseboards and casing
Baseboards and door and window casing make up most of the linear footage in a room, and they show wear first. We wipe them down, sand off the old sheen, fill dents and nail holes, and recaulk the top edge where it meets the wall. Floors get tape and paper along the base so the bottom edge stays clean on hardwood, tile or carpet. Two brushed coats of enamel go on, laid off in long strokes so brush marks level out. Window stools and aprons come with the casing unless you say otherwise.
Interior doors and frames

Doors are the slowest trim to paint well. A six-panel door has recessed panels and edges that must be painted in a set order so wet paint is never dragged over areas that have started to dry. Most doors are painted in place, with hinges and knobs masked or removed, covering both faces and the latch edge. For the smoothest finish, especially on flat slab doors, they can come off, be sprayed in a garage and rehung once the enamel is hard. Frames and stops are painted alongside so color and sheen line up.
Crown molding
Crown molding sits where walls meet ceilings, which is where gaps, cracks and wobbly paint lines show most. Seasonal movement in the framing opens joints at corners and along the top edge, so those get filled and caulked before paint. We cut a straight line on both the ceiling side and the wall side with an angled brush, since tape does not seal well against a textured ceiling. Crown in a two-story room or above tall cabinets needs bigger ladders or planks, which is why hard-to-reach trim costs more per foot.

Around Atlanta
Older trim, Gwinnett County homes and the 1978 line
Trim in an older house can hide lead paint under later coats. Under EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 must work for an EPA lead-safe firm using trained renovators; the rule does not apply to homeowners working on their own homes. Even in Gwinnett County, where housing skews newer, 4.3% of homes predate 1970 and another 57.3% date from 1970 to 1999, a span that includes the last pre-1978 years. Check the build year before anyone sands trim.
How the job runs
How we take trim from scuffed to smooth
Count and test
We measure footage, count doors and test whether the old finish is oil or latex.
Clean and sand
Trim is wiped, then sanded dull so primer and paint grip.
Fill and caulk
Holes and dents are filled; gaps at walls and corners get fresh caulk.
Prime where needed
Bare wood, filler and old oil get the right primer.
Two coats of enamel
Brushed and laid off in long strokes, doors propped open to cure.
Questions
Trim & Door Painting questions we hear in Atlanta
Usually not. We paint them in place with hardware masked or removed, and take them off when you want a sprayed finish.
Rub a hidden spot with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. If paint comes off, it is latex. We test during the walk-through.
Enamel feels dry long before it cures, so leave doors ajar for several days.
Semi-gloss wipes cleanest. Satin hides more dings on older, dented trim.
Yes. Deep-colored trim, or trim in the wall color, is common now, and we can sample it first.
Interior sashes and sills can be included. We keep the sash moving and do not paint it shut.
