Short answer
Brookhaven became a city in December 2012, yet its houses span about a century. Historic Brookhaven grew up around a country club course opened in 1912, while about two in five homes here date from 2000 or later. Older houses need patient plaster and trim prep; newer ones mostly need interior repaints and townhome exteriors.
Homes in Brookhaven
A club-era neighborhood, postwar streets and two decades of infill
The city takes its name from Historic Brookhaven, the neighborhood laid out around the Capital City Country Club. The nine-hole course opened in 1912, the clubhouse was finished in 1928, and in 1986 the club and its estate homes were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of that neighborhood was complete by the end of World War II.
Major building followed from the 1950s to the 1970s, and the area was largely built out by 1980. Even so, the median home now dates from 1994, because so much has been added since: 20.7% of homes were built in the 2000s and 19.4% in the 2010s. Lynwood Park, historically a neighborhood of wood and cinderblock houses, now has new craftsman-style homes, and attached townhomes make up 9.3% of the city's housing.
For painting, that range matters. Older houses can have plaster walls, wood windows with many coats and trim that needs slow scraping. Newer homes and townhomes usually have drywall, flat builder paint that scuffs at the first move, and an HOA with a say in exterior color. Just over half of occupied homes are owned, so pre-listing repaints sit alongside long-term renovations.

Questions
Painting questions from Brookhaven
Yes. Read us the approved color names when you call, or keep the community schedule on hand at the walk-through, and we use those exact colors and sheens on siding, trim and doors.
Yes. Loose plaster is secured, cracks are taped and filled, and the patch is feathered so it blends with the original wall before primer and paint go on.
Often, for the interior. Many new homes leave the builder with flat wall paint that marks easily, and a washable eggshell or satin holds up far better in halls, stairwells and kitchens.
Voters approved cityhood on July 31, 2012, with 55% in favor, and the city was incorporated on December 17, 2012.
