Short answer
Kitchen cabinet painting in Atlanta is priced mostly by the door, and published local figures run about $70 to $90 per door. Most of that pays for prep: degreasing, sanding, bonding primer and, on oak, grain filling if you want it smooth. Expect the kitchen to be partly out of use for several working days.
Why most of a cabinet job happens before the color goes on
Factory cabinet finishes are made to shrug off stains, which also means they shrug off new paint. So the job starts with grip. We remove every door, drawer front and hinge, number each piece to its opening and bag the hardware. Boxes and face frames are degreased, since the film near the range and the pulls is what makes cabinet paint peel a year later.
Every surface is then scuff sanded and primed with a bonding primer made for slick finishes. Doors and fronts are sprayed flat on racks set up away from the kitchen, so the enamel levels without brush marks; the boxes are brushed and rolled where they hang.

Choosing between options
Paint, restain or replace: what each one gets you
All three are real choices for a dated kitchen.
| Compare | Paint | Restain | Replace |
|---|---|---|---|
| What changes | Color, completely | Wood tone, within limits | Everything, layout included |
| Wood grain | Covered or softened | Stays visible | Depends on the new doors |
| Kitchen downtime | Several working days | Similar to painting | Weeks, with demolition |
| Best fit | Sound boxes, any finish | Solid wood, even stain | Damaged boxes or a new layout |
| Main tradeoff | Chips need touch-ups | Hard to go lighter | Highest cost and disruption |
What drives the price
Where a painted kitchen lands on price
Local pricing is per door. These five details set where you land.
Published range: $70 to $90 per door in Atlanta. Source: HomeBlue, 2026. A planning figure, not our quote.
Door and drawer count
Pieces drive the price more than the size of the room.
Door style
Raised panels and beaded edges sand and spray slower than slab or shaker.
Grain filling
A smooth finish on oak adds filler, primer coats and sanding.
Color change
Dark stain to white needs a stain blocker and sometimes another coat.
Extras
Islands, crown molding, interiors and new hardware holes add time.
Oak and grained cabinets
Oak has open grain, and the grain shows through paint. You can leave that texture, which reads as painted wood and hides small dings, or fill it with grain filler and a high-build primer for a smooth, furniture-like door. Filling adds coats and sanding, so we price both and show you a sample door. Oak, cherry and some older stains also bleed tannin into pale colors, which is why grained cabinets get a stain-blocking primer before white or cream enamel. Skip it and yellow shadows show up within weeks.
Two-tone kitchens

Two colors are as practical as they are stylish. Darker lowers hide scuffs from shoes and vacuums, while lighter uppers keep a small kitchen bright. The planning is in where one color stops. The usual break is the countertop, with the island in the darker color or a third accent. End panels, the tall pantry beside the refrigerator and the trim under the wall cabinets each need a call, so we mark them on a sketch before primer. Both colors go on in the same sheen, or the kitchen reads as patched instead of planned.
Islands and built-ins
Islands take the hardest wear in a kitchen: stools kicking the panels, grocery bags dropped on the corners, splashes beside the dishwasher. They get the same primer and enamel as the perimeter, with extra care on the toe kick and the seating side. Many houses also have built-ins that belong with the kitchen, like a desk nook, a bar cabinet or bookcases beside the fireplace. Painting them in the same visit keeps color and sheen consistent from room to room, and costs less than setting up the spray equipment a second time.
Cabinets get a bonding primer such as Zinsser or Insl-x Stix, then a cabinet enamel from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore or PPG.

Around Atlanta
Gwinnett's 1970s to 1990s kitchens, and why they repaint well
Gwinnett County's housing makes a good case for painting cabinets instead of tearing them out. In the Gwinnett County School District area, 57.3% of homes were built between 1970 and 1999, and 66.8% of families own their home (ACS 2019 to 2023). Kitchens from those decades often have sturdy face frames and boxes under a finish that has yellowed or worn thin. When the boxes are sound and the owners plan to stay, paint changes the look without a tear-out.
How long your kitchen is out of commission
Plan on several working days for an average kitchen, more when grain filling or a big color change adds coats. The doors are gone for most of it, but the sink, range and refrigerator stay usable. Enamel hardens slowly, so close doors gently for the first few weeks.

Questions
Kitchen Cabinet Painting questions we hear in Atlanta
Yes, unless it is filled first. Maple, birch and MDF doors paint smooth without filling.
Only if you ask. Most people leave them as they are, since it adds time and cost.
Sound laminate can, over a bonding primer. Lifting thermofoil should not be.
Yes. Tell us before we start, and we fill the old holes and drill for the new pulls before primer.
Usually satin or semi-gloss. More sheen wipes clean more easily but shows dents more.
A soft cloth and mild dish soap; scrub pads dull the enamel.
