Short answer
In Atlanta, a published 2026 estimate puts interior painting at $4 to $7 per square foot, or $4,755 to $8,523 for a 1,282 square foot job. Most of that is labor: the same estimate assigns 122 hours of work. Ceilings, trim, color changes and wall repair decide where your home lands in that range.
Atlanta, Tucker and Stone Mountain: three local price bands
HomeYou published 2026 interior estimates for Atlanta, Tucker and Stone Mountain using the same 1,282 square foot sample job, and the three bands overlap almost completely. Interior work, in other words, is priced much the same intown and in the DeKalb suburbs.
| Source | Area | Published range |
|---|---|---|
| HomeYou, August 2026 | Atlanta | $4,755 to $8,523 ($4 to $7 per square foot) |
| HomeYou, October 2026 | Tucker | $4,790 to $8,586 |
| HomeYou, June 2026 | Stone Mountain | $4,404 to $7,894 |
| HomeAdvisor, June 2026 | National | $2.75 per square foot for walls; $4.70 per square foot with trim and ceilings |
| Thumbtack, 2026 | National | $917 for one room to $4,893 for eight rooms |
The per-square-foot figures do not all measure the same thing. Some guides divide by the floor area of the house, some by wall surface, and some count walls alone. Before you hold a bid against any of these numbers, ask what the painter's square footage includes.

Room by room: bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms
National per-room figures from two cost guides show how far a single room can swing. The low ends usually describe walls only, one color over a similar color. The high ends assume ceilings, trim, doors and two coats.
| Room | HomeAdvisor, 2026 | Improovy, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | $240 to $720 | $650 to $950 |
| Kitchen | $300 to $960 | $850 to $1,350 |
| Bathroom | $140 to $420 | $380 to $670 |
| Dining room | $600 to $1,200 | $750 to $1,150 |
| Living room | $700 to $2,000 | $940 to $1,700 |
Kitchens and bathrooms have less open wall than their price suggests. The time goes into cutting in around cabinets, backsplash tile, vanities and fixtures, and into the stain-blocking primer that a bathroom ceiling or the greasy wall behind a range often needs.

Call (470) 876-1448Why hours of labor, not gallons, set the price
HomeAdvisor puts labor at 75% to 95% of what you pay for interior painting. The Atlanta estimate above splits its sample job the same way: $3,612 to $7,286 for 122 hours of labor and $1,143 to $1,238 for paint and supplies. Moving up to a better paint line changes the materials line by a modest amount. Adding a day of patching or a second wall color changes the labor line far more.
That is also where you can trim the bill. Rooms cleared of books, wall art, lamps and small furniture before the painters arrive take less setup. We still cover floors and shift the heavy pieces, but an empty bookcase moves faster than a full one.
Ceilings, trim and doors: the add-ons that can double a room
Walls are the cheap part of a room. Trim and doors are slow brushwork: Improovy prices trim at $2.05 to $3.30 per linear foot and doors at $70 per side for a plain slab, up to $380 per side for a multi-pane French door. A bedroom with crown molding, chair rail, a closet door, a six-panel entry door and two windows can carry more trim labor than wall labor.
Height adds cost as well. Fixr's national figures for a 2,200 square foot house show the same job at $11,001 to $20,474 with 8 foot ceilings and $14,816 to $27,574 with 12 foot ceilings. Two-story foyers and great rooms need planks, long poles or a lift, and stairwell walls get priced on their own for that reason: Improovy lists them at $780 to $1,540.

Color changes, accent walls and textured walls
Repainting a wall in its current color is the simplest job there is. A big color change usually means a primer coat or an extra finish coat, especially going from deep red or navy to a light neutral, or the reverse. HomeAdvisor estimates that accent walls add 20% to 30% to a job and textured walls up to 50%, because cutting a crisp line between two colors and working paint into knockdown or orange peel texture both take time.
If you are torn between colors, test them on the wall first. Sample patches seen in your own morning and evening light cost far less than a third coat later.
Older DeKalb houses and the repairs they bring
Much of the housing around Tucker went up as ranch and split-level homes from the 1950s to the 1970s, and in the DeKalb County school district area 26.5% of homes were built before 1970. Older houses bring plaster cracks, settled corners, nail pops and layers of oil-based trim enamel that latex will not grip without a bonding primer. Each of those is prep time, and a quote that buries it in a vague line is hard to compare.
Homes built before 1978 add one more step. Under EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those houses must follow lead-safe work practices with trained renovators, which means plastic containment, careful sanding and specific cleanup. Ask any painter how they will handle it before work starts.
What an interior quote should spell out
- Every room by name, and in each one: walls, ceiling, trim, doors and closets.
- Number of coats on each surface, and where primer goes.
- How patching is handled: small nail holes included, larger drywall or plaster repair priced separately.
- The paint line and sheen for walls, ceilings and trim.
- Who moves furniture and what gets covered.
- The order of rooms, if you are living in the house during the work.
If one bid comes in far below the others, check its closets, ceilings and doors first. Those are the items most often left out.
